Live-in vs live-out maid or nanny: how to choose

The practical differences between live-in and live-out domestic help in the UAE – space, hours, privacy, cost factors and what to agree up front.

By Nannest Editorial Team · Published · 5 min read

Many profiles on Nannest say "live-in", "live-out" or "live-in or live-out". The choice affects your home, your budget and the helper's day-to-day life, so it is worth thinking through before you start interviewing.

What live-in means

A live-in helper lives in the family home. The family normally provides a private room, meals and agreed rest time. Live-in arrangements suit families who need help early in the morning, in the evening or with very young children.

Things to plan for:

  • A private, lockable room with a window and proper ventilation.
  • Clear working hours and rest time. Living in the same home makes it easy for work to spill into rest time. Agree hours up front and respect them.
  • A weekly day off that the helper can spend as they choose.
  • Privacy on both sides – house rules about guests, phone use and shared spaces.

What live-out means

A live-out helper has their own accommodation and comes to your home for agreed hours. This suits families who want more privacy at home, have no spare room, or only need help for part of the day.

Things to plan for:

  • Reliable transport and what happens if the helper is late because of traffic.
  • Fixed start and finish times, and how overtime is handled.
  • Whether you need flexibility for evenings or occasional weekends.

Questions that help you decide

  1. Do you need help before 8am or after 7pm on most days?
  2. Do you have a suitable private room?
  3. How important is privacy for your family?
  4. Do the children need someone overnight, for example a newborn?

Visa and sponsorship

Whether someone can work live-in or live-out for you also depends on their visa and sponsorship situation. Check the current rules with MOHRE before you agree terms.

Finding the right profiles

You can browse live-in nannies in Dubai, live-out maids in Dubai or filter any search by living arrangement. Profiles marked "live-in or live-out" appear in both.
