Job scams aimed at domestic workers: warning signs and how to stay safe

Common scams targeting nannies, maids and helpers – upfront fees, fake agents, document requests – and what to do if something feels wrong.

Most families are genuine, but scammers do target domestic workers. Knowing the warning signs protects your money and your documents.

Warning signs

  • Someone asks you to pay for a job, a visa, "processing", training or a medical test before you start.
  • An "agent" contacts you saying they represent a family and asks for money or your documents.
  • A salary that seems far higher than similar jobs, with pressure to decide quickly.
  • Requests to send copies of your passport or ID over chat before you have met anyone.
  • The employer refuses to meet or to give an address.
  • Messages move you away from a known platform to unknown apps or links.

Golden rules

  1. Never pay money to get a job. Creating a profile and applying for jobs on Nannest is free for helpers.
  2. Your passport and identity documents belong to you. Do not hand them over to keep.
  3. Meet the family before you agree to anything, in a safe place or with someone you trust nearby.
  4. Ask for the job terms in writing, in a language you understand.

Check the rules

The rules for domestic work in the UAE are set by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). If you are unsure about a visa, contract or fee, check with MOHRE or an authorised domestic worker service centre.

Report it

If a job post or a person on Nannest asks you for money or seems suspicious, tell us through the contact page (or the report link on a profile). Our team reviews every report. Read more safety advice.
